For the third year running the Octagon Theatre has been awarded an ‘Our Street’ Community Award from the Mencap Lufton College of Further Education. Staff and students from the college vote every year in order to decide which local organisations should be awarded for ‘providing the best service to students with learning difficulties’.
Mencap Lufton College is a specialist residential college that provides personal, social and vocational education, care and therapy to young people ages 16 – 25 with a range of learning disabilities. As a college they deliver flexible, personalised learning and transition programmes, enabling and empowering students to fulfil their aspirations whilst promoting independence.
Jeanie Augarde, Equality and Diversity Lead Manager of Lufton College, commented, “The students here at Lufton College have a really good relationship with the Octagon, in both a performing and audience context. We are very pleased that the Octagon has won an award again this year; the students have now voted for the Octagon in three consecutive years so it is clear that the Theatre has a big impact on their lives”.
The Octagon’s Arts and Entertainment Manager, Adam Burgan, also commented, “We are so proud and delighted to have been awarded and ‘Our Street’ Award for the third year running. We are passionate about ensuring the theatre is welcoming and accessible to everyone and couldn’t be happier that the students of Lufton College have voted us as one of their favourite places”.
Sylvia Seal, portfolio holder for Leisure & Culture added, “The Octagon Theatre staff are very proud with this award from Lufton College as it shows what a great relationship we have with their students and also shows the level of service we can provide to students with learning difficulties. To receive the award for the third year running also shows the level of consistency in customer service and experience that our staff at the Octagon Theatre are delivering.”
The Octagon Theatre, which is run by South Somerset District Council, looks forward to offering their continued support to Lufton College and would like to thank the College again for honouring the Theatre with this award.
